The decay of the English language

I have to get on my soapbox and vent about a major pet peeve. Nothing irks me more than intelligent people, as well as fricking advertisers, using horribly bad English.

Seen on a Healthy Choice coupon... "Are you craving for something good?" According to the King's English, one doesn't "crave for" anything. One may crave or one may have a craving. ARGH. The stupidity of it makes me writhe.

Heard from many a professional.... "So, I'll meet you on tomorrow." You can meet me tomorrow or you can meet me on Friday but you can't meet me ON tomorrow.

Or how about these train wrecks.... "What needs done?" "This room needs vaccuumed." Uh.... did the infinitive "to be" cease to exist, unbeknownst to me???? I've lost count of how many times I've heard otherwise well spoken people use these uncharming little bastardizations.

I certainly don't claim to be all that smart. But the one thing that I have consistently maintained in my life is a proper command of the goddamn English language. It makes me ill to think that children, such as my young impressionable Connorboy, are hearing these egregious attacks of syntax and are assuming them to be the correct way of speaking and writing.

God, I'm craving for some Excedrin. On today. Because my headache needs medicated.

P.S.

Last nite I saw the movie P.S. with Laura Linney and Topher Grace. I think it was based on a book of the same title.... the premise was pretty interesting but unfortunately there was so much that seemed to be missing. Afterwards, I watched the deleted scenes which kind of explained some things but it was still largely imperfect.

Still, despite its imperfections, there was still something about the movie that really touched me. Not sure if it was undercurrent of dissatisfaction and raw emotion in Laura Linney's character's life. Or the fact that it was about an art school admissions officer and an MFA candidate. Or the whole older woman/younger man thing, which speaks to my wannabe-MILF sensibilities.

The cast was absolute perfection... Topher Grace (cutelittlehottie), Gabriel Byrne (theaccentmakes mepurr), Paul Rudd (myfuturebabydaddy), Marcia Gay Harden (sosexyquirkyIddoher). But by far the best part of the movie is the totally hot sex scene on a couch between Laura Linney and Topher Grace - real time, no soundtrack, urgent and embarrassing all at the same time.... definitely not the sweet, vanilla network TV couplings of Eric and Donna on That 70's Show.

15 minutes of fame

Reading over my posts for the last few months, I realized that I haven't written anything about the awesome project I worked on with ScrollQuest. I am the creator of the Guardian Amulet pictured on the site.

Jason King and his partner Evan, creators of the whole thing, are totally brilliant. I think they will do well and I hope (cross my fingers - hope hope hope!) that my connection to their brilliance means good things in the future.

I AM the fashion police, dammit!

Dear Tacky Lady at the Arundel Mills PetSmart,
Please be advised, next time you stop to purchase a 50 lb sack of Hill’s Science Diet for your big ugly dog, you must wear something other than sweatpants, a flannel shirt and Birkenstocks with white athletic socks. You offend my delicate sensibilities.
Thank you,
The Management

Yard Rats. A Poem.

Blundering through the yard late at night.
Wish I had a better flashlite.
I hear a rustle, am I not alone?
A scurry, a skitter…. Chills me to the bone!
Swinging my meager light to and fro,
I search for the source… is it friend or a foe?
OH MY GOD! Is that a rat in the tree???
Phew, no, just a small possum I see!

His Holiness, The Dalai Alpaca

So I went to see the Dalai Lama at the MCI Center with Kerri and John on Sunday. It left me with good feelings. His Holiness is a real stand up guy.

I was really cool how down to earth he is. He has a great sense of humor and palpable humility. It gives me hope for humanity that he exists.
